Purity Rings + Hollywood = Bad Mix?

We've all heard of the infamous purity rings being worn by Young Hollywood; Superstars like Selena Gomez, The Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus have publically announced their promise to the Lord to remain sexually pure until marriage. But, if these celebrities are standing up for something they believe in, why are they being criticized?

British Comedian, Russell Brand didn't hold back at this year's VMAs. From the get-go, the Jonas Brothers were on his comedic hit list, facing Russell's comments that mocked their choice to wear purity rings, and questioning whether or not they've held up to their promise.

Of course, the mood wasn't entirely serious- fans and celebrities both knew that Russell Brand was joking, but that didn't stop a certain celebrity from voicing her opinion. When 2007 American Idol Jordin Sparks took the stage, she saw it as an opportunity to express her emotions toward Brand's comments. “I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut,” stated Sparks.

Following Spark's heated voice of opinion, Brand decided to set the record straight and announced to the audience that his comments were all fun & games. He apologized to the celebrities, their fans, and the Jonas Brothers for the comments he had made, and apparently that apology made all the difference. Youngest 'Jo Bro' Nick responded to his comments: "For us, it's cool to see that he recognizes we are gentlemen." Nick even went to say, "I think he did a good job [at the show]," Nick said. "We saw him on Conan O'Brien and thought he was hilarious" Seems like Nick J is a fan, but does older brother Kevin feel the same way about Brand's hosting job? "I think he focused on certain things and didn't move off of them. People's attention spans in America need more than that," he said.

So there's still an obvious mix of opinions when it comes to a subject so controversial, but not everybody saw the situation negatively. The national director of the Silver Ring Thing, Jason Burtt, spoke out, "I've received a good amount of feedback. Nothing negative, but mostly positive support from all over the country from people interested in the program," he said.

Looks like sometimes situations that start off negatively can ultimately have a positive result! :)
